So we have come to another Kentucky Art Car Weekend! I have to say, I love this weekend more than most in Louisville. I work on one of the same blocks as this car show and it is always a welcome Friday to step out of the office and see these pieces of art/stuff/odd just begging to be made fun of and smiled upon. One of the things that I think everyone should be is a tourist in their home town. This may seem a little strange and I am sure most people are thinking, "I've already seen everything in my town!" I doubt that is actually true. In most cities of any size (and I am talking cities as small as 500 people), there are little oddities or bits that are really worth seeing and not just driving by.
In Louisville, there are lots of these types of sights. From the major attractions (like Churchill Downs, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, the Speed Museum) to the minor ones (the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, the Thomas Edison House, any of the multitude of art galleries throughout the city), there is a lot to see. Many of the people that live in Louisville know all about the major attractions and will immediately direct visitors and out-of-towners to those places. I really have no problem with that. However, on weekends where I don't have much going on, I like to find those sneaky, out of the way places that people rarely visit. These are the places that really lend the character to Louisville and make it such a great city.
The Kentucky Art Car Weekend, sponsored by the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, is one of those opportunities. I get to be a tourist, if only for a little while. This event started 9 years ago and was a very small collection of cars. Occupying only a few parking spaces, the event was still a success, or at least enough of one that every year it has gotten steadily larger. Last year, the Art Cars occupied almost two full blocks of Main Street in Downtown Louisville. This year, it already appears to be surpassing that mark.
The Art Car takes place the same weekend as the Street Rod Nationals. The Street Rod Nationals is the annual show showcasing "Street Rods," cars generally made before 1949 that have been suped up with modern drive trains. The Street Rod Nationals is the largest gathering of Street Rods anywhere in the world. The Art Car Weekend is not really a jab at the Street Rods, but more a complimentary (if a bit eccentric) show designed to tickle people's funny bones instead of their inner mechanic. The Art Cars are always outlandish. Some are covered in the heads of dolls, some are covered in mirrors, others are covered in fish (plastic ones, not real ones). There are singing cars, bubble making cars, and cars that just make you roll eyes (especially the ones that appear to be looking back).
The Art Car Weekend usually also coincides with the First Friday Trolley Hop in Downtown Louisville. The Trolley Hop is a showcase of all of the art galleries that line Market and Main Streets in Louisville. From 5-9pm on the first Friday of every month, the galleries get to show off their artists. The trolley takes event attendees in a circuit around downtown for free. There is food and wine and merriment all around...and a lot of art. The art community in Louisville thrives because of events like these. As such, there are always new things to be seen and new ways to become a Home Town Tourist.
